Smart Nutrient Retention Networks: a novel approach for nutrient conservation through water quality management

چکیده
Nutrients are essential resources for food production but used inefficiently, and thereby they pollute inland coastal waters lost into the oceans. Nutrient conservation by retention consecutive reuse would prevent nutrient losses to atmosphere downstream ecosystems. We present Smart Retention Networks (SNRNs) as a novel management approach achieve across networks of connected waterbodies through strategic water quality management. To key features SNRNs, we review existing knowledge processes in waters, options conservation, models develop SNRNs. argue that successful even at local level, SNRN strategies requires clearly formulated goals catchment-wide system understanding. Waterbody characteristics, such hydraulic residence time presence macrophytes, shape with potential network-wide cascading effects improved therefore targets strategies. include self-reinforcing feedback loop ecological quality, retention, loading relation can support development conclude SNRNs contribute sustainable use nutrients human production.

متن کاملa novel approach for water quality management in water distribution systems by multi-objective booster chlorination
compared to conventional chlorination methods which apply chlorine at water treatment plant, booster chlorination has almost solved the problems of high dosages of chlorine residuals near water sources and lack of chlorine residuals in the remote points of a water distribution system (wds). however, control of trihalomethane (thm) formation as a potentially carcinogenic disinfection by-product ...
متن کاملUpper washita river experimental watersheds: nutrient water quality data.
Climate variability, changing land use and management, and dynamic policy environments are the main reasons why long-term research is needed to understand and predict possible water quality outcomes to alternative future scenarios. Long-term water quality data sets are needed to address these water issues. Such data sets were acquired by the USDA-ARS in three watersheds in Oklahoma: the Souther...
متن کاملIn-Stream Nutrient Retention in Agricultural Catchments
In northeastern Austria, marshlands have been turned into the most productive arable land of the country. As a result, most headwater streams show structurally degraded channels, lacking riparian buff er zones, which are heavily loaded with nutrients from the surrounding crop fi elds. Th e present study examines whether longitudinally restricted riparian forest buff ers can enhance the in-strea...
